What Qualifications Do You Have? Our practice specializes in working with couples using the most effective form of couples therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Stephanie Saari, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Owner of Renewed Relationships Counseling Group is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and Supervisor, meaning she is one of the most highly trained EFT therapists in California. All of our Associate Therapists have completed advanced EFT training.

How often do we need to attend therapy sessions? To start with, weekly therapy sessions are important in order to build comfort and safety in the therapy space and create momentum towards meeting your goals. We compare therapy like going to the gym, a consistent commitment to the process is key. Eventually moving to bi-weekly sessions  may be an option and can be discussed with your therapist.

What can I expect during my first session? In your first session, we will get clarity on your current challenges, relationship history, and goals for therapy. Together, we will create a safe and supportive environment for you to share your thoughts and feelings openly.

What kind of topics can we discuss in therapy? You can discuss a wide range of topics in therapy, including communication issues, conflict resolution, sex, intimacy problems, infidelity, family stress, and life transitions. Feeling comfortable to talk about anything that will help decrease distress is key to a successful therapy process.

Is couples therapy confidential? Yes, couples therapy is confidential. We will keep your personal information, and everything we discuss private, unless there is a legal obligation to disclose it due to a risk of harm to oneself or others.

How long does couples therapy take? The duration of couples therapy can vary depending on the complexity of the issues and the goals of the couple. Some couples may benefit from a few months of sessions, while others may require more extended therapy.

Can I attend therapy sessions alone if my partner doesn’t want to participate? Yes, good work can be done with just one member of the couple. We provide both individual and couples therapy and can accommodate and help the relationship, even if just one member is willing to participate.

Do you accept insurance? We do not accept insurance, however if you have “out of network” benefits, we can provide you a “superbill” to submit to your insurer for potential reimbursement.

Can I schedule a consultation? Yes, the first step in working with us is scheduling a complimentary 20-minute video consultation. This allows us to ensure we are a fit for your needs, tell you more about the process and answer any questions you have.

Do you work with couples of all orientations and cultures? Yes, we are an LSGTQ+ ally and are experienced in supporting couples of various orientations and cultures. All are welcome here!

We’re not sure if we should seek therapy. Could it make things worse? It’s completely normal to feel hesitant about seeking therapy. Many couples wait until their relationship is in crisis before seeking help. However, it’s often more beneficial to seek therapy early on, before problems escalate. It’s better to talk about and address what is happening, even if it feels hard at first, then to let problems go unaddressed and create undelrying issues.

What to Expect

The first step in starting Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is reaching out to us for support.  It can feel hard to take that first step, but it might help to know that most people feel a sense of relief after their first session and are much more comfortable than they expected.

Once you contact us, we will set up a 20-minute video consultation with you both so that we can ensure we are a fit for your needs, answer any questions you have, and find a scheduled weekly session time.

We will then send you both a link to fill out our private practice forms online prior to your appointment. You will have an online portal to manage your schedule, billing and securely communicate with us.

Then, plan to meet weekly for your 50-minute online session. Consistency in attending sessions is the most important factor in making steady progress in your therapy process.
